With a focus on personal and professional growth, Protective’s 10-week internship program provides students a summer of meaningful work experience and opportunities in collaboration, communication, culture and community, all while learning more about what it is like to work at Protective.

Our internship program provides high-performing college students with hands-on experience, mentoring and insight into our business operations. Interns have the opportunity to collaborate with business leaders to develop and execute solutions to real business problems. They also work across the organization in key areas, including Operations, Distribution, IT and Actuarial.

In 2022, the program welcomed 21 interns from 10 universities: The University of Alabama, Auburn University, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Cincinnati, as well as  Jacksonville State University, Samford University, Dartmouth College, Appalachian State University, Hillsdale College and University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Interns worked at Protective’s Birmingham and Cincinnati-area core sites.

Interns participated in roundtable discussions with senior leaders, prepared and gave business presentations and participated in team-building activities. As part of our commitment to serving people and our communities, interns also had the opportunity to volunteer at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham.

We asked our interns about their experience and what the opportunity meant to them. Here’s what they had to say.

What were your impressions of Protective and the internship program?

“Protective has some of the best people. Everyone is so kind and caring, truly a family and rooting for your success. They focus on your strengths and push you to be the best you can be. I felt treated as an equal member of the team. There was always something to do or someone to meet. It was an internship unlike any other.”

“The internship program is incredibly well-rounded. It immediately throws interns into the fold of whatever department they are in; I have always been included in team meetings, important projects and department celebrations not just to observe but to contribute as a valued member of the team. At the same time, Protective invests in my overall career development with mentorship opportunities, meetings with senior leadership and a presentation series with applicable topics like networking, presentation skills and financial wellness. Protective talks the talk about caring for employees, but then walks the walk by continuing to actively invest in them both personally and professionally. Protective has successfully created an environment where all employees are valued regardless of the role they play in the business.”

— Sara Catherine, Actuarial intern

“I respect Protective as a company a lot. The culture here is unmatched and it really is a great place to work. I respect this idea of hiring and developing. This philosophy is hard to come by when applying to more technical jobs.”

Why did you choose the Protective internship program?

“Through my interviews, I saw that Protective values its employees and cares about fostering their growth. I also noted how there was a full program already laid out for us, which shows the dedication and effort put into the intern program, unlike other opportunities.”

— Will, Information Technology intern

“This opportunity was recommended by one of my professors. Protective was one of the few places I thought I could truly learn the inner workings of the actuarial field. I also noticed that Protective offered housing to interns in need. ”

What are your biggest takeaways from the internship?

“I am taking away a priceless experience. From the people I have met to the work projects I completed, it felt like every day I was learning something new. I will be walking away from Protective's internship program with an expanded network and improved skills, as well as new friends. I am thankful for everything I have gained over these 10 weeks.”
