After winning silver at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, Korea, the 31-year-old skater from Belgium has won a gold medal at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, China in the speed skating mass start event. It was the first gold medal at a Winter Olympic Games in 74 years for Belgium, achieved on 19th February 2022. Also in February, World Skate nominated Bart Swings to compete in The World Games 2022, taking place from 7th to 17th of July in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Belgian, nicknamed ‘The Flash’, has the qualification for starts in the race over 10,000 metres (elimination and point elimination). This offers him the chance to become one of the top ten most successful athletes ever at The World Games. At his starts in Cali, Colombia, in 2013 and Wroclaw, Poland, in 2017 Bart Swings won a total of four gold as well as two silver medals, plus one bronze medal.
Bart Swings also joins Brady Ellison in a very select club of winning medals at two different Olympics and two different editions of The World Games. The American archer has won two silver medals and one bronze at Olympic Games, and two silver medals at The World Games.
Congratulations Bart on being named February’s Athlete of the Month, and we’re looking forward to cheering you on in the future!
