Ayse Onbasi (TUR), is the new World Champion in aerobic gymnastics. She is a former World Junior Champion (2016) and she has won over 60 medals as a junior, earning the nickname "The Medal Monster." The event in June was her first senior World Championships, and her gold medal was the first medal that Turkey has ever won at the Aerobic World Championships.
Onbasi also impressed the judges at the World Championships with her accuracy, picking up a secondary award of $5,000 for precision. In distinguishing the winners, jury members evaluated grace and harmony of movement as well as precision of the exercise. Onbasi worked hard before the World Championships, training for up to nine hours a day. She is very likely to qualify for The World Games 2022, and she mentions Marcela Lopez (BRA, TWG champion 2009) and Aurelie Joly (FRA, TWG Champion 2009 & 2013) as her idols.
As The World Games Athlete of the Month, Ayse Onbasi will receive The World Games Athlete of the Month diploma as well as a branded gift from the Official Sponsor of Athlete of the Month, Protective Life.
Ayse recently shared more with Protective Life about aerobic gymnastics and five key words that she thinks of when she thinks about the sport. “Perseverance. Passions. Discipline. Freedom. Self-Devotion.”
Congratulations to Ayse on being named June’s Athlete of the Month, and we’re looking forward to cheering you on in the future!
